How much fragrance should you use in wet wipes?
Fragrance is about 4% of the cost, yet it is the first thing customers notice.
In this guide, we use worked examples to explain the right dosage for wet wipe fragrance, its cost per pack and how to choose a scent for your product.
The right dosage: 0.3–0.5%
The fragrance rate is calculated on the total weight of the finished solution, not on the water or the premix.
- 0.3%A light scent, noticeable but never overpowering. A good starting point for everyday, household and surface wipes.
- 0.4%Medium intensity. In personal care wipes, the scent comes through as soon as the pack is opened.
- 0.5%Intense and long-lasting. The usual choice for deo, cologne and premium perfume-note wipes.
Set the exact rate by testing samples with your own fabric and solution. The same fragrance comes across differently with a different fabric and packaging.
Example: fragrance cost per pack
72-sheet baby wipes, 331.8 g of solution per pack, fragrance at $12/kg, 3% waste. Figures are from a WipeWise sample report; prices are examples.
331.8 g × 0.3% = 1.00 g fragrance / pack
Fragrance cost per pack: $0.0123 · on 24,000 packs $295
331.8 g × 0.4% = 1.33 g fragrance / pack
Fragrance cost per pack: $0.0164 · on 24,000 packs $394
331.8 g × 0.5% = 1.66 g fragrance / pack
Fragrance cost per pack: $0.0205 · on 24,000 packs $492
In this example, fragrance at 0.3% accounts for only about 3.6% of the $0.3382 pack cost. Saving on fragrance barely lowers the cost, while a weak scent makes the product harder to notice on the shelf.
Choosing a scent for your product
First define what the wipe is used for, then your target customers. The scents below are examples from our scent finder.
Soft, powdery and creamy scents at a low rate. Examples: Baby Powder, Chamomille, Aloe Vera, Cream Sensitive.
Fresh, floral or fruity scents. Examples: Green Tea, Lavender, Bouquet Fresh, Softy Peach.
Intense, long-lasting scents: the perfume-note range and cologne-style freshness. Examples: Lemon Fresh, perfume-note fragrances.
Citrus and ocean scents that feel clean. Examples: Lemon Bomb, Lime & Lemon, Ocean Fresh.
Light, soothing scents. Examples: Aloe Vera, Ocean Fresh, Sweetie Apple.
No separate fragrance needed: ANKA TIM 0020 solution comes pre-fragranced in 22 scents.
Eco or perfume notes?
The two ranges are designed for different products; the dosage is the same.
Economical, long-lasting, clearly recognisable scents. Suitable for baby, everyday, household and surface wipes.
Richer, longer-lasting scents inspired by well-known perfume notes. Suitable for deo, cologne and premium personal care wipes.
Common mistakes
Most scent complaints come down to one of these.
- Calculating the rate on the water. The rate is based on the finished solution: water, premix and fragrance combined.
- Judging the scent from the bottle. Assess the fragrance on wipes that have been loaded with solution and packed; the scent in the bottle is not the scent on the wipe.
- Not testing scent longevity. Leave sample packs for a few days, then reopen them to see how the scent changes over the shelf life.
- Using too much fragrance. A higher rate than needed raises the cost, makes the scent heavy and increases the risk of irritation on sensitive skin.
- Changing the premix without re-testing the fragrance. Whenever the premix or fabric changes, test the fragrance again with the new formulation.
- Not asking for documents. Export and labelling require an IFRA compliance certificate, an allergen declaration and a safety data sheet (SDS).

Fragrance is used at 0.3–0.5% of the finished solution. 3–5 kg of fragrance is enough for 1 tonne of solution.
How much fragrance is in a pack of wet wipes?
It depends on the amount of solution per pack. The 72-sheet baby wipes in our sample report carry 331.8 g of solution per pack; at 0.3%, that is about 1 g of fragrance.
How much does a higher fragrance rate affect cost?
In our example, going from 0.3% to 0.5% adds about $0.008 per pack; on an order of 24,000 packs, that comes to about $197.
Can fragrance be used in baby wipes?
Yes; soft, powdery and creamy scents at a low rate are preferred. For products aimed at sensitive skin, base the decision on samples and documentation.

Intense, long-lasting scents: the perfume-note range and citrus scents with cologne-style freshness, at a rate close to 0.5%.
