How much does it cost to set up a wet wipes factory?

Investment from $50,000 to as much as $1 million.

The figure is set by your decisions, not by the machine: which product you make, how much, and with how much automation. This guide explains the cost items behind the investment and how to pin down your budget.

Why is the investment range so wide?

The same budget question comes from a small workshop making single restaurant wipes and from a multi-line baby wipes plant. Quoting one figure before the project scope is clear would be misleading.

Entry level

The low end of the range. A single-wipe (restaurant) machine or a second-hand line, a compact space and limited automation. For those who want to enter the market with a low investment.

Single-line plant

A new line for core products such as flip-top wet wipe packs, with packaging and solution preparation: a complete production setup.

Large-scale plant

The high end of the range. Multiple lines, high automation and several product groups. We plan projects above $300,000 with our Large Projects package.

What makes up the investment

Don't base your budget on the machine price alone. A wet wipes plant is made up of the following items:

  1. Machine lineFolding, cutting, wetting and stacking; new or second-hand. Usually the largest item of the investment.
  2. Packaging equipmentFlow wrapping, lid applicator, labelling and cartoning; depends on your product.
  3. Solution preparationMixing tank, dosing system and water treatment: the most often forgotten part of the budget.
  4. Space and infrastructureProduction area, hygienic fit-out, electricity, compressed air and plumbing.
  5. Initial raw material stockNonwoven, premix, fragrance, packaging film, lids, labels and cartons; part of your working capital.
  6. Staff and trainingOperators, maintenance and quality control; training during machine installation.
  7. Quality controlA lab setup for pH and microbiological testing of the finished wipes.
  8. Permits and certificatesProduct registration, production permits and export documents; these vary by country.

6 decisions that shape your budget

Once these questions are answered, the investment amount becomes clear too.

1. Which product will you make?

Single, baby, cosmetic, cleaning or cologne wipes: each requires different machines and packaging.

2. What is your target capacity?

Set your capacity by how much you can sell, not by machine speed.

3. How much automation?

The level of automation changes headcount, investment and unit cost all at once.

4. New or second-hand?

A second-hand machine lowers the initial investment, but service, spare parts and suitability for your product must be assessed carefully.

5. Space: rent or buy?

The building is one of the items that changes the budget most. A compact plant can be laid out in 150 m².

6. How will you prepare the solution?

Working with a premix lets you make the solution from a single concentrate and water instead of many separate chemicals.

Calculate your return on investment

See your pack cost and profitability before you buy a machine. The payback period depends on your profit per pack, your sales volume and the amount invested.

  1. Cost per packCalculate the cost per pack from nonwoven, solution, packaging and overheads.
  2. Profit per packFind your profit per pack from the selling price in your target market.
  3. Monthly salesWork out your monthly profit from the number of packs you can sell.
  4. PaybackEstimate the payback period by dividing the total investment by your monthly profit.

Common mistakes

The budget mistakes we see most often in the projects we consult on.

  • Looking only at the machine price. Installation, training, service and access to spare parts matter as much as the price.
  • Forgetting working capital. The initial raw material stock and the running costs until your first sales must be in the budget.
  • Skipping the solution preparation area. Tanks, dosing and water infrastructure need as much planning as the machine.
  • Sizing capacity to the machine, not the market. Capacity you cannot sell will not pay back the investment for a long time.
  • Not planning the space before the machine arrives. Machine layout, material flow and hygiene zones must be drawn from the start.
  • Quoting prices without calculating cost. A price set without knowing your pack cost makes the return on investment uncertain.
